DNA sample identify the remains of missing pair

- BY SAM ROBERTS

Aengus Shanahan THE remains of two people missing for decades have been identified thanks to a new method of extracting DNA samples.

It is believed other such cases will soon emerge due to the developments in forensic science.

Margaret Glennon went missing from her home in Baldoyle, Co Dublin, in May 1995.

Remains were discovered in the capital in November 2014, but scientists have only now been able to confirm they were those of the 59-year-old.

James Gallagher was just 18 when he disappeared from Cabra, Dublin, in 1999.

It has now been confirmed a body found in 2002 is almost certainly that of the missing teen.

And last month it was revealed bone fragments found in Co Clare 17 years ago belonged to missing Limerick man Aengus “Gussie” Shanahan.

Prime Time journalist Barry Cummins said the DNA extraction process could be revolutionary in missing person cases and could lead to more remains being identified in the future.

He added: “This is such an important day for all missing persons and their families. This news gives such hope to so many people following on from the Gussie Shanahan case.”
