Segale THE man who inspired video game icon Super Mario has died, aged 84.
Mario Segale was a successful Italian-american property developer from the US state of Washington.
Nintendo rented one of his properties in the 1980s and developers named the moustachioed character in game Donkey Kong after him. The story goes that Segale walked in to get the rent one day and was only placated when they vowed to put him in a game. Super Mario quickly became the most successful video game franchise of all time – still selling millions today. Segale joked in 1993: “Still waiting for my royalty cheques.” He leaves wife Donna, four children and nine grandchildren.
