Q

Please can you advise me how to get masonry paint off UPVC frames/windowsills?

Janet Lynch, by email

A

The key is to protect the surface, which is very difficult. I use soapy water and a sharp piece of wood as wood does not scratch and you basically just rub off the paint. You could try something sharper, but you risk scratching the plastic.

Q

Could you please recommend a good waterproof glue?

Gordon Scott, by email

A

I take it you mean wood glue, as other materials are usually bonded with adhesives like silicone. Try Gorilla Glue – you can get a tub at most good hardware stores.

Q

I have just had over 30 square metres of Indian stone patio laid. Do I need to seal it? Views seem to vary considerably. If you think I should what do you recommend I use? Ronnie Kirkham

I never use a sealer as it changes the look and you can never go back to natural stone. All hard surfaces weather, leading to moss and algae. Scrub with hot soapy water when it needs it.
