Speight of injury’s so awkward..

v IT SAYS much of Henry Speight’s attitude that he’s been left red faced by his lack of recent action for Ulster due to injury.

Since joining the club in the summer on a short term deal until the new year, the 19-times capped Wallaby has featured in five of Ulster’s nine games.

Speight, who was recently sidelined for a month with a knee injury, is due to return Down Under in just eight weeks so he is eager to make up for lost time.

The versatile back notched his second Ulster try on his return to action in last week’s 36-18 win over the Dragons and today starts on the left wing against Benetton.

“It was quite embarrassing,” said Speight of his recent period out injured. “Showing your face and knowing you cannot train or contribute. It was a very disappointing time.

“The first two weeks were very hard to show (my) face around the club knowing I wouldn’t be training and knowing the guys knew I was only here for a short time.

“It was a long four weeks, especially knowing the length of my stay, so to come back and play last week was pleasing.”

While Ulster sealed their first bonus point win of the season against the Dragons, defence coach Jared Payne was openly critical of the team’s shortcomings.

The fact Dan Mcfarland’s men have shipped 197 points in their last six outings – an average of almost 33 points per game – is of growing concern.

On Payne’s post match candour, Speight said: “He was still a bit upset – disappointed, I guess. We’d play well, score and then get turned over from the kick-off.

“At times when they did score it was from very passive defensive work so it was very disappointing.”
