Enjoy the glory days now lads!

CORK CITY’S young guns have never had it so good but Alan Bennett has warned them it won’t always come so easy.

The Rebels are heading into their fourth FAI Cup final on the spin having won the last two and with a shot at three in-a-row tomorrow.

In his first spell with his hometown club, Bennett missed out on a double in 2005 when Cork lost the cup final to Drogheda United.

An eight-year spell in England followed and while they lifted the trophy in his absence in 2007, Cork did not reach another decider until he returned in 2015.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Aviva Stadium clash with Dundalk, Bennett is telling young players like Sean Mcloughlin and Conor Mccarthy to savour the moment.

“In any line of work you want your work to mean something. For us to be able to put together a legacy, to write our history, is beyond my wildest dreams,” he said.

“For the younger players, the most important thing is to understand the process that got us to this situation.

“It’s not about focussing on the fact you’re in four finals or lost the league this year or going for the league next year.

“It’s understanding every single rep, every single run, every single drill that you have done to get to this situation and to maintain those standards.

“That’s the most important thing because it will slip by really quickly and before you know it, it’s gone and then you’ll realise that, ‘Oh, we’re not making the final this year’.

“You have to think back to last year to remember ‘What were the standards we set.’ But it’s too late then so it’s about understanding the process more than anything.”
