Luas makes 550 halts for emergency

- BY CORMAC O’SHEA

A Luas tram LUAS drivers have had to slam on the emergency break 550 times this year due to other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

And 266 of the incidents were down to cars breaking red lights.

A further 223 were caused by pedestrians entering the tramway suddenly and another 61 due to cyclists.

Transdev revealed the total number is down on 570 from last year but with two months to go it is likely to surpass that.

A Luas spokesman said: “Our drivers have an excellent safety record and are trained in defensive driving. They are trained to anticipate this behaviour.

“When it happens, the driver applies the emergency brake.”
