Garda probe after woman killed in river drown horror

Danny Healy-rae A WOMAN drowned yesterday died after getting into difficulty while kayaking.

The tragedy happened on a stretch of the Roughty River, less than a mile from Kilgarvan, Co Kerry.

After the alarm was raised shortly before midday and the Coast Guard, fire service volunteers, gardai, paramedics and volunteers all responded.

An extensive search was conducted and the remains of the woman were recovered.

It is understood the victim was in her mid 30s and from the Cork area.

Her remains were brought to University Hospital Kerry and gardaí said enquires are continuing.

It is believed she was part of a group of five people who were kayaking on the deep-cut river that flows into Kenmare. With its challengin­g rapids, it is a very popular with kayaking enthusiast­s.

Local TD Danny Healyrae said it was an “appalling tragedy” that has left everybody in the village very shocked and saddened.

He added he was driving from his home towards Killarney when an ambulance and fire engine passed him in the opposite direction and he was later informed of the tragedy.
