THE decline in numbers in our Defence Forces is a serious cause for concern.

And it’s clear the exodus is not merely people retiring as the tally has dropped below the minimum accepted threshold of 9,000.

Fianna Fail’s Jack Chambers is right to express worry the 9,219 figure a year ago has now slumped to 8,989.

Many of those leaving are doing so for better pay and conditions. What has to be done to address those issues and ensure our Defence Forces retain personnel – rather than watch them walk out the door?

It’s obvious something radical is needed.
