FAI Cup joy for Dundalk after Mceleney strike

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

DUNDALK ace Michael Duffy claims he got a bigger thrill winning the FAI Cup yesterday than from clinching the league title.

Patrick Mceleney secured a second double in four seasons with a rare headed goal late on in a gripping Aviva Stadium decider.

It denied Cork City a third FAI Cup in-a-row and boss John Caulfield said last night that sweeping changes will be made at the Rebels next season.

But after getting over the line, Duffy beamed: “I think that feeling there probably beats winning the league! This

year has been brilliant. I came here to win trophies and was gutted last year with how it went. We want to do the same next year and also in the Champions League which is going to be a big thing for us.”

This was the fourth successive final between these great rivals but Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny (above) admitted it would have been hard to stomach losing a third on the bounce.

He said: “We have won and lost here and when you lose it’s a lonely place. It would have been difficult to face going up the road without it. I couldn’t even think about it. The euphoric nature of winning it late on is really special.”
