The new series kicked off on Sunday night with 6,000 more people tuning in compared to the first outing of the broadcaster’s previous hit crime drama eight years ago.

An RTE spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror yesterday: “Episode one of Taken Down had an average of 445,000 viewers and a 34% share. It’s currently the No1 programme on the RTE Player.

“The first episode of the first series of Love/hate aired on October 3, 2010, and had an average of 439,000 viewers and a 27% share.”

Taken Down is a six-part series directed by David Caffrey and co-written by Stuart Carolan and Jo Spain – who were the creative team behind Love/hate. It centres on Garda Inspector Jen Rooney, played by Lynn Rafferty, who is investigating the brutal death of a young Nigerian migrant close to a direct provision centre.

She unveils the dark dealings of slum landlords and criminals.

Dublin actress Rafferty is also a former Love/hate star and is best known for playing Ado’s girlfriend Nadine in the gritty drama.
