HOMELESS MAN FOUND DEAD ON THE STREET
Charity slams ‘turmoil’ in system after 27th fatality in 16 months
ANOTHER homeless person has been found dead on the streets.
Gardai are investigating after the man, aged in his 40s, was discovered in Dublin city centre at around 8am yesterday.
The Polish national was found on Cook Street near Christchurch with the cause of death not yet known.
A postmortem will be carried out while a file will be sent to the Coroner’s Court. A Garda spokesman said officers and emergency services attended the scene, where the man was pronounced dead.
Inner City Helping Homeless urged those in authority to act immediately to prevent more fatalities.
Chief executive Anthony Flynn sent his condolences to those who knew the man.
And he warned Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy more will die as the system is “in turmoil”. He revealed: “This brings to 27 the number of on-street deaths in as little as 16 months.
“We have continuously warned Minister Murphy deaths would be prevalent on the streets if additional resources including beds were not assigned to the crisis.
“The system is in turmoil and the DRHE [Dublin Regional Homeless Executive] are finding it difficult to implement the required number of beds and have failed to launch the cold winter initiative to date.
“Last night [Monday] 145 people slept on our streets. We need an immediate emergency intervention.”
Two weeks ago, the charity called for 200 cold weather beds to be brought in “immediately”.
But they said they are still waiting on the authorities delivering them.
