Ryan airs thoughts on return

- BY GERRY MCLAUGHLIN

DONEGAL have been handed a boost with the news that their double All Star Ryan Mchugh is on the comeback trail.

The Kilcar star, who picked up his second All Star at the weekend, is aiming to make a return by the start of the NFL at the end of January.

Mchugh had been ordered to take a rest from all activity at the end of August after suspected concussion.

That meant he missed out on his club’s entire county championship campaign, and there were fears that he might be out for the county as well.

But Mchugh revealed: “I am back in the gym and hope to get back running soon.

“I am hoping to get back in full training for the new year and to be ready for the NFL.”

Meanwhile, Mchugh admitted he was a “little surprised but extremely delighted,” to receive his second All Star award.

It was an historic double, as he equalled his father Martin’s two, which were won in 1983 and 1992.

And with brother Mark and uncle James also having All Stars, from 2012 and 1992 respectively, it is quite the dynasty being built by the Mchugh clan.

A delighted Ryan said he felt “honoured and privileged” to be getting his second gong.

“It is great to be getting the second one after getting one in 2016.”

When reminded that he had equalled his dad’s tally, he chuckled: “Yes I suppose so, but he has a Celtic cross that I don’t have.

“Any award you pick up is great and they are greatly appreciated.”
