Dogs saved from horror ‘near death’ before rescue

- BY LAURA LYNE

A PAIR of boxer dogs were subjected to horrific conditions and near death when they were rescued by the ISPCA last year.

Ace and Artie were discovered in grave condition on a property in Co Kildare in January 2017.

Last Monday, a man was convicted of animal cruelty offences and sentenced to eight months in prison.

But now, the adorable pair are thriving after being adopted by a loving family and their owner Jim said the two dogs are “inseparable”.

He said: “Ace, the older dog, took a bit longer to relax but now is a lovely family pet.

“Artie has always been a bit more energetic, and needed to learn how to settle a bit. Now they are both in great form, and doing incredibly well.”

Ace and Artie were discovered in an extremely poor physical state and living in deplorable conditions and were then taken to the National Animal Centre in Co Longford.

The dogs were extremely emaciated and upon examination a vet confirmed they were suffering from severe malnutrition with their ribs and visibly protruding.

Ace also had lesions along its back and hind legs and the tip of his tail had been damaged.

ISPCA chief inspector Conor Dowling said: “The conditions these dogs were kept in was simply shocking.”
