ROVERS ARE ON THE RIGHT LINES

- BY IAN BAKER

RUSS O’NEILL joked how his heart nearly stopped beating after Guiseley almost blew a 4-0 lead.

The National League North club held on to upset their League Two visitors – but only after a nail-biting finale.

Cambridge scored three late goals and O’neill, who shares managerial duties at Guiseley with Marcus Bignot, said: “I’ve never known anything like it, I thought my heart would stop at the end of it.

“We’ve watched them over the last few days and we knew they were dangerous, even at 4-0 down.

“Another five minutes and they would have got back in it. It’s a fantastic result for this club.”

Guiseley took the lead 25 minutes in thanks to Will Hatfield’s shot and made it 2-0 five minutes before the break when Cliff Moyo’s cross looped over keeper David Forde and into the net.

Their third came through Kaine Felix three minutes after the restart and Kingsley James flicked added a fourth before the hour mark.

Then came Cambridge’s fightback, started by Jabo Ibehre on 65 minutes. George Maris narrowed the gap further on 89 minutes and Ibehre struck again.

Moyo said: “I wish I meant my goal but sometimes you need a bit of luck in the FA Cup, that’s the magic of it. We’re buzzing to be in the next round.

“It was difficult because they’re fulltime and we’re parttime. We stepped up today and showed them what we are about.”

Norburn’s opener was cancelled out within two minutes by Salford captain Adam Rooney.

Ex-macclesfield boss Askey urged fans to put the result into context.

He said: “Of the last eight games, we’ve won four, drawn one and lost three. Supporters have got to understand Salford is not the normal

National League team,”

Salford chief Graham Alexander said: “We can hold our heads high.” BRISTOL ROVERS boss Darrell Clarke hailed his side as they battled to a replay against BARNET despite playing much of the game with 10 men.

Rovers had Stuart Sinclair dismissed after just seven minutes for a two-footed challenge and then the Bees took the lead through Craig Robson.

But the League One side levelled through Chris Lines’ penalty and should have won as they hit the woodwork three times. Clarke said: “I’m proud of my team. It’s difficult to play 83 minutes with 10 men.”

Toby Stevenson bundled home an equaliser to prevent CHARLTON being upset at MANSFIELD.

The Addicks appeared to be going out to the League Two side after CJ Hamilton put the Stags ahead just before the break before Stevenson’s 73rd-minute intervention.

But boss Lee Bowyer (above) was not happy as he has an injury-hit squad. He said: “That’s the worst outcome for us.”

HITCHIN, the lowest-ranked side in the first round, were knocked out 2-0 by SOLIHULL, managed by former England keeper Tim Flowers. National League leaders WREXHAM won 2-0 at WESTONSUPER-MARE thanks to Luke Summerfield and Stuart Beavon goals.

Joey Barton’s FLEETWOOD easily won 4-1 at Alfreton thanks to two Paddy Madden goals, and efforts from Ash Hunter and Gerard Garner.
