attacked fan’s rehab gets cash boost from italian club
AS Roma has announced it will donate €150,000 to the family of Liverpool fan Sean Cox.
The 53-year-old was attacked by the Italian club’s supporters outside Anfield before the Champions League semi-final in April.
Mr Cox, from Dunboyne, Co Meath, suffered head injuries and has returned to Ireland where the dad of three is undergoing rehab but remains in a serious condition.
Roma president Jim Pallotta said yesterday: “What happened to Sean Cox should never happen to anyone attending a football match.
“Our thoughts today, as they have been from day one, are with Sean, Martina and their whole family. We all hope Sean makes as full a recovery as possible.”
Mr Pallotta announced the donation of an “initial sum” of €150,000 to “help with medical and rehabilitation costs”.
The club will give €100,000 through its Roma Cares foundation, while the president will make a personal contribution of €50,000. Meanwhile, tickets have gone on sale for the Sean Cox Benefit Fundraiser GAA match.
Dublin will take on Meath at 1.30pm on December 16 at Pairc Tailteann in Navan, Co Meath. Tickets are on sale at gaa.tickets.ie and participating Centra and Supervalu stores.
The Sean Cox Gofundme page has raised €398,123 of a €2million target.
IT was a welcome and appropriate gesture by the Italian football club AS Roma president Jim Pallotta to donate €150,000 to help Irish Liverpool fan Sean Cox.
The attack by two of the club’s fans outside Anfield last April shocked and sickened the nation.
And it was heartbreaking to hear how the assault has dramatically changed the life of the Co Meath man, his wife Martina and family.
The fundraising drive will be a lengthy one, as will the rehabilitation process.
And every cent will count as the Cox family and locals in Dunboyne strive to give dad-ofthree Sean as much support as possible.
