Douglas tells of drink and drug curse
Cameron, has battled heroin addiction. Michael, 74, said: “You have to be careful, so you learn about genetics.
“It’s on both sides of my family – so with my younger ones, they keep a much closer eye on it. I have ongoing conversations about it.”
The star of Wall Street, Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct added: “I was in rehab in 1991, probably more alcohol but drugs were a part of it.
“I lost my brother and my eldest boy spent seven and a half years in a federal prison for a nonviolent drug offence. Now he is fine, doing really well.”
Michael, also an awardwinner as a producer, told a US podcast that glitzy ceremonies used to be a hotbed for drink and drugs.
He explained: “Man, it was rough, it was insane. Between the amount of drinking that was going on and what was going on in the bathrooms, it was all happening.
“It wasn’t on TV, that’s what changed all these awards, they had to clean up their act.”
But his dad, screen legend Kirk Douglas who is 101, is “genetically sound”.
Michael said: “He’s always asking me, ‘Are you working out?’ He’s had a trainer for ever. Everything they say about that special generation is true.”
