“I’ve felt he, CEO Philip Browne and the committee have given us huge support, they’re great people to work for.

“So it will be a chat with David on Monday – or might even be Sunday evening.”

Schmidt jokingly described his wife, Kellie, as his other CEO and he said: “Kellie and the kids – we’re going to get a bit of time for a brunch on Sunday and kind of nut a few things out.

“Yeah, look it’s tough for me. I’m not sure, you know, and I can’t believe the support we’ve had here as a family. at 124 kilos and

I was really struggling around the pitch although I felt reasonably good at scrum time.

“So my bounce around the pitch was pretty poor because I was carrying all this excess weight and, to be honest, it wasn’t a good weight for me.

“I was a bit heavier around the midriff. I’ve slimmed down a lot. I am at 117-118 kilos now and I feel way better around the pitch.

“I’ve more energy and I can bring more to the game. I don’t feel too bad in scrum time as well – I‘m lighter, I’m more energetic and I can provide more for the team.

“I’m really grateful for the chance and for the trust from the coaches to get the start. I’m absolutely thrilled.

“Just doing the basics well will be really big for me. Just scrummagin­g, my lineout and maul work and then being effective around the field.

“Sticking to the systems we have. Just fitting in.” “Obviously with (his 15-year-old old son) Luke, he’s had phenomenal support (with a severe epilepsy condition).

“I’ll ask her the question and see how we go!

“I can’t continue to go backwards and forwards I’ve beaten myself up on the decision, and I’ll be the most pleased when the decision is made.”
