Lauryn is getting intimate..
Iconic Miseducation album still means so much to Hill
It’s been 20 years since Lauryn Hill released her epic debut solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and the rapper and soul singer is celebrating with an Irish show next week.
Hill, 43, who shot to fame in hip-hop trio the Fugees, is set to play Dublin’s 3Arena on November 30 to showcase tracks from her only studio album, which is is widely regarded as one of the best of the 90s.
The Doo Wop hitmaker caused a stir earlier this week for showing up to her Brussels and Paris shows two hours late and playing for just 30 minutes.
The singer took to social media to apologise for the tardiness, attributing the incident to adjusting the production in a new continent.
“We’re working through the kinks of moving the production to Europe, with time changes and curfew restrictions, we’ve had a few challenges in these early shows,” she wrote.
“With deep gratitude I come on stage to perform an album that means so much to so many,” she continued.
“Every day we push past inertia to present something sincere. Thank you for coming, supporting and for your patience and understanding.”
A portion of all ticket sales from this tour go towards the MLH (Ms Lauryn Hill) Fund, which contributes to supporting education, agriculture, health, technology and community businesses through the Diaspora.
Speaking about the tour, she said: “This album chronicled an intimate piece of my young existence.
“It was the summation of most, if not all, of my most hopeful and positive emotions experienced to that date.”
Following the huge success of The Miseducation of
Lauryn Hill, which won five
Grammy Awards, including album of the year,
Hill continued to tour but later took herself out of the public eye.
The mum-ofsix was sentenced to three months in jail in 2013 for tax evasion.
Hill returned with six well-regarded recordings for the Nina
Simone documentary in 2015, and The Miseducation ... also continues to be highly regarded, with Exfactor being prominently sampled twice this year, on Drake’s chart-topping single Nice for What and Cardi B’s single Be Careful.
lms. Lauryn Hill – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 20th Anniversary hits Dublin’s 3Arena on Friday November 30. Tickets from €72.75 available at Ticketmaster.
