‘PLAYERS GET FLAK BECAUSE OF JEALOUSY’

- BY NICK SZCZEPANIK

ROY HODGSON reckons his players are under as much pressure as the Manchester

United stars they will face at Old Trafford today.

And the Crystal Palace boss (above) believes that envy of their high salaries is behind much of the criticism they attract.

Hodgson watched Jose Mourinho on TV yesterday defending himself against suggestions he had accused four of his stars of lacking character.

The players had all been extensively photographed arriving for training at Carrington in contrast to the peace and quiet at Palace’s Beckenham HQ.

“All players are under pressure, not just at Manchester United, and we shouldn’t underestimate that,” the former England head coach said. “I am a defender of the player today who gets criticised for many things.

“A lot of that criticism comes from jealousy and envy of the salaries they earn today compared to what some former stars earned. But their life is far from being an easy one. I think with the pressures they are under, they deserve some credit from time to time for the way they handle it.

“It’s not always a fun time for them and I have sympathy for them.”

His sympathy extended to defender Mamadou Sakho, who hinted he still harbours thoughts of playing in the Champions League.

“Is the Champions League in my mind? Why not?” the 28-year-old (left) said.

Hodgson said: “They are asked if the summit of their ambition is to play for a team in the Premier League but is not likely to get into the Champions League, and is that something they are happy with?

“I don’t think you can expect any answer other than the ones they give. I don’t pay too much attention to these stories.”
