Almost 200 in Scouting Ireland sex abuse claims
Katherine Zappone NEARLY 200 people claim they were sexually abused as a child by members of Scouting Ireland, it has emerged.
Last week a report revealed 108 alleged victims said they were targeted by 71 suspected abusers in the 60s and 80s.
Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone told how a helpline has received 80 extra calls by people saying they were abused.
She added she had discussed with Scouting Ireland the steps they are taking to ensure all alleged victims are being properly supported and counselled.
Ms Zappone said she wanted to ensure the same level of support will be made available to anyone else who comes forward.
She sought reassurance “all allegations found within the historic files or subsequently brought to the attention of Scouting Ireland will be immediately referred to Tusla and to the Garda” or any other relevant police authority.
The review, conducted by safeguarding expert Ian Elliott, is not yet complete. It is expected the number of victims will increase.
Scouting Ireland has 40,000 child members and 13,000 adult volunteers.
