I’ll carry on making jokes about #Metoo

TOMMY Tiernan said the #Metoo movement has given him a lot to think about – but it won’t stop him from “taking the mickey” out of it.

The 49-year-old comedian has no plans to censor his show in case people are offended.

Tommy, who is one of Ireland’s most outspoken stand-ups, said he believes people can see the funny side when his material cover controversial issues.

Tommy told the Irish Mirror: “We live in an age where everyone is really careful and really worried, and the wrong phrase could set the pack on you.

“Stand-up is a place where you can say it doesn’t matter, we’re here for fun and nobody’s going to take it seriously.

“It’s been a while since a comedian has been attacked for what they say, so I think there’s an awareness they’re only messing.”

The Co Meath man denied the #Metoo movement, which is against sexual harassment and sexual assault especially in the workplace, has made him change his comedy routine.

He said: “No, it’s given me something to think about off stage, but on stage, we have to attack it.

“On stage, now I don’t know if this is the right thing to say, but you have to take the Mickey out of it.

“You have to push the boundaries of it onstage. Women, when they come to a comedy show are up for the devilment of it… I think people want you to push the boundaries.

“I don’t think it’s right to be undermined culturally. I think in stand up, in that special room, I think you can take the p**s out of it.”

Last month Tommy finished filming the second season of his comedy series Derry Girls, which is set to hit TV screens early next year.

Tiernan, who plays Da Gerry, hinted that a big screen version could be in the pipeline.

Speaking to Today FM’S Ian Dempsey recently, Tommy said: “We finished filming the second series last Friday so that’ll go out in March. We’re doing season three and then a film maybe

“That’s all up to Lisa [Mcgee, Derry Girls creator]... That’s her going away and sitting in a shed in London and just coming up with all the stories.

“She’s a genius in terms of the amount of stories she fit into each episode. I think it’s fantastic.”
