Thanks to the continuing drama of Brexit, it’s been a pretty soui-destroying year. So I had to raise a glass to Emmerdale for trying to lift the nation’s spirits with its Christmas Day episode.

Marlon and Jessie’s surprise wedding was a tonic from start to finish. Jessie’s aunt Bonnie stole the show with a sparkling debut and there was even a clever festive joke, with Cain Dingle dancing to Candy by Cameo at the reception. What could be more Christmassy than Candy Cain?

Unfortunately, I don’t think the other two big soaps got the memo.

Corrie was dramatic with the odd dash of misery.

Eastenders was miserable with the odd dash of drama.

Don’t get me wrong – there was nothing wrong with the performances. In Walford, Jessie Wallace acted her heart out as

Kat’s world imploded in that claustrophobic Slater living room.

Meanwhile, up in Weatherfield, Joe Duttine did a nice line in suppressed rage as Tim discovered Gina had been leading him and Sal a not-so-merry dance.

I just fancied a bit more fun on the big day. Obviously, Phil Mitchell taking the Shane Macgowan role as he and Rainie duetted on Fairytale Of New York at the Queen Vic’s Karaoke party was almost worth the Licence Fee alone.

Similarly, Kirk and Beth enjoying some illicit meat produce in the toilet at Daniel Barlow’s vegetarian Christmas dinner was a welcome slice of classic Carry On Corrie.

Sadly, these comedy moments were too few and far between. Next year I hope everyone follows Emmerdale’s motto.

Forget the BAFTA – bring the laughter.
