TIPPING POINT

Senator warns over mixing up Christmas rubbish

- BY FERGHAL BLANEY Political Reporter

TIPPERS who dump Christmas waste into other people’s bins are costing everyone more money, a senator warned yesterday.

Fine Gael’s Hildegarde Naughten said separating rubbish will increase the recycling bill – and called for action from apartment block owners or managers to cut it out. And Senator Naughton, chair of the Oireachtas Climate Committee, said firms must pass on any savings from the new waste collection model.

She added: “Under the new household waste collection arrangements model, householders are incentivised to recycle more of their waste with elements or combinations of standing charges, and per-lift, per-kg, weightbands and weight-allowance charges.

“Meanwhile, most apartment dwellers are paying the same fees as before regardless of the new household collection waste collection rules.

“Any incentives are lost and while people in individual apartments can be extremely diligent with their recycling, some of their neighbours in the same building block may not be so attentive. Sadly if even one person in the block is not recycling correctly, the building’s recycling efforts can be contaminated and end up as landfill.

“I am calling for all management companies to show their tenants a breakdown of the cost of their waste. This would ensure everyone in apartment blocks does their best.”
