Why is my penis sore?

-

Symptoms:

The head of your penis is red and swollen and it smells. You can no longer move your foreskin forward.

Your penis is inflamed, sore and swollen, and you have a discharge. It’s painful when you pass urine.

Your penis is sore and smelly, you have an unusual white yellow discharge from the tip and a burning sensation when passing urine. Your foreskin is inflamed.

It could be:

Smegma, a cheesy looking substance found on the head of the penis under the foreskin. It can build up if you don’t wash your penis every day.

Balanitis, an inflammation of the head of the penis possibly due to poor hygiene, but also to thrush. It could be caused by soap or condoms.

An STI such as gonorrhoea or chlamydia which may even cause pain in the testicles.

Stop it:

Wash your penis every day and be meticulous about cleaning under the foreskin. Use a mild antiseptic cream like savlon to prevent infection.

See your GP or STI clinic for diagnosis of your condition and treatment of the underlying cause.

Go to an STI clinic as soon as you can to confirm the diagnosis and the infection. Both gonorrhoea and chlamydia are getting more difficult to treat all the time.
