THIS is the horror gunshot wound inflicted on a takeaway worker and his colleague in a New Year’s attack.

The men suffered injuries to their chest and stomach after being blasted by a lone gunman on a bike.

A friend of victim Vasile Batica said: “I am shocked by what happened.”

The attack happened at Edenmore Shopping Centre, near Raheny, North Dublin, just after midnight and the trigger man is known to garda.

TWO takeaway workers have been hospitalised after they were blasted by a callous bicycle-riding gunman on New Year’s Eve.

The trigger man is well known to gardai and lives close to the location of shooting at the Edenmore Shopping Centre, near Raheny, North Dublin.

The horrific incident happened 22 minutes after midnight as staff at Mizzoni’s Takeaway were in the kitchen.

A source said: “The two injured men are working at the pizzeria – both are originally from outside of Ireland.

“It is understood that a lone gunman came to the shop door on a bicycle and shot in the door of the takeaway – the initial theory is it was a robbery but there are also other lines of inquiry.

“He shot a relative of the owner and another worker, a cook, inside the kitchen area.”

Gardai rushed to the scene and began a hunt for the attacker and his alleged accomplice. The men injured in the appalling incident have been named locally as cook Vasile Batica and manager Ionut “Johnnie” Dateu.

They were taken to hospital for treatment – Vasile suffered an injury to his stomach while Ionut has a chest wound.

Vasile’s friend and former Mizzoni colleague Hassan Mahmood has spoken of his shock at the horror incident.

He said: “I had spoken to him and wished him happy New Year – then I went to bed and one of the girls rang me to tell me of what happened. I am very shocked especially that I was working there before.

“I called my friend and he sent me the picture of him – he is shot near the kidney.

“I have tried to call Vasile but I could only get through on text.

“There has been a lot of trouble in that area before – I had my car window broken and the money was taken.

“There was some of the time we would stay in the shop for security. I am shocked by what happened – I wasn’t expecting that this kind of thing would happen.”

Gardai have arrested two men who are related to each other.

It is believed the older of the men, 44, is well known to gardai and comes from a family with a long track record of criminal activity.

The younger man, who is only 18, is also known to officers.

A spokesman said last night that investigators are appealing for witnesses and urged anyone with information to come forward.

He added: “Gardai at Coolock in Dublin are investigating a shooting incident which occurred at a food takeaway premises at the Edenmore Shopping Centre at approximately 12.22am this morning, Tuesday, January 1.

“Investigating gardai are appealing for witnesses or any person with information to contact the incident room at Coolock Garda station on 01 6664200, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
