SEAN’S LEGENDS

- BY ALEX DUNNE

IRISH soccer greats will take on Liverpool legends in a charity match for seriously injured fan Sean Cox.

The 53-year-old, from Co Meath, was attacked by Roma supporters before a Champions League match at Anfield.

Dad-of-three Sean faces a long recovery after suffering serious head injuries last spring.

The FAI said the match will be held at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on April 12.

No players have been announced but Ireland manager Mick Mccarthy will be taking charge of the boys in green.

Sean’s wife Martina, from Dunboyne, said the match will be a “special day”, adding: “It’s going to be a very long and slow process for Sean’s recovery and I’d like to thank the overwhelming support Liverpool fans have shown.

“I’d also like to thank the club, players and former players who will be playing in the match for their support.”

FAI chief John Delaney described the game as “ideal” for helping to raise funds for the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust.

He added: “We have a strong relationship with Liverpool having hosted Jurgen Klopp’s team at Aviva Stadium for the last two years.

“It should be a great night for a fantastic cause.”

Liverpool chief Peter Moore said the club is behind Sean and his family.

He added: “We hope this unique legends game will be a huge success and help generate vital funds to support Sean’s rehabilitation.

“The solidarity shown from supporters throughout the world for Sean is incredible and we thank everyone for their support, including the FAI in helping to arrange this game.” A number of fundraisers have been held to help for medical costs.

Ratoath Harps hosted a football tournament and auction and Meath took on Dublin in a GAA game. Roma pledged €150,000 while Liverpool have raised nearly €60,000.
