Warning as frost & hail to strike in bitter cold spell

Cold snap is expected in coming days TEMPERATUR­ES are set to plunge tonight as a freezing cold front brings frost and hail to Ireland.

Met Eireann said we’ll see a dramatic change in the weather with “widespread frost” and the mercury dropping as low as -3C tomorrow night.

Today will be cloudy and breezy during the day with some light rain and highs of 8C to 11C. But it’s set to get very chilly after dark, with temperatur­es nosediving to as low as 1C.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “A cold front will sweep south-east- wards across Ireland on Tuesday night bringing a spell of rain to most areas.

“Much colder air will move in as it clears with the risk of a frost towards dawn on Wednesday. Minimum temperatur­es of 1C to 4C in moderate south-west winds.

“Feeling noticeably colder on Wednesday with a mix of sunny spells and showers. Rain will be most frequent in the west and north at first but extending to most areas during the day.

“Some of the showers will be heavy with hail and the slight risk of thunder. Top temperatur­es of 5C to 8C in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

“On Wednesday night widespread frost will form by dawn with the risk of ice. Minimum temperatur­es of -3C to 2C in moderate north-west breezes.

“Turning frosty for a time on Thursday night but rain will begin to edge in across the western half of the country.”

And current indication­s for Friday show a cloudy and damp day with scattered rain showers.

The change in conditions comes as the UK braces itself for freezing weather with snow, ice and frost predicted.
