Border Fox guilty of false imprisonme­nt & assault

Ex-terror chief is released on bail

FORMER terror chief Dessie O’hare yesterday pleaded guilty to assault and false imprisonme­nt charges.

The one-time INLA leader, known as the Border Fox, admitted the offences at the non-jury Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

Lawyers acting for the 62-year old confirmed he assaulted John Roche, causing him harm, at The Towers, Garter Lane, Saggart, Co Dublin, on June 9, 2015. He also admitted falsely imprisonin­g Martin Byrne at Rathcoole and Saggart on the same date. Defence barrister Sean Guerin told the threejudge court a trial would not be required and his client could be arraigned on two of the counts.

He said he would ask the court to take two other counts into considerat­ion.

When the registrar asked him how he was pleading to the charges, O’hare, of Slate Rock Road, Newtownham­ilton, Co Armagh, replied “guilty” to both. Judge Tony Hunt, presiding, sitting with Judge Patricia Ryan and Judge Ann Ryan, remanded him on continuing bail with the same terms and conditions until April 3 when he will be sentenced.

The accused was once the most wanted man in Ireland.

Fath belongs to Iran’s elite Revolution­ary Guards Corps. The army said: “A Boeing cargo 707 had an emergency landing at Fath.

“It exited the runway during landing and caught fire after hitting the wall at the end.” An army spokesman added the plane was Iranian, as were all on board.
