‘REGENCY THREAT’ KO’S FURY EVENTS
‘night with’ boxer dropped after menacing messages
TWO Tyson Fury speaking events have been pulled after a college campus received a serious threat of a “repeat Regency” shooting.
Gardai are investigating after graffiti appeared on the walls of Dublin City University, which was due to host one of the events at its Helix venue.
One of the chilling messages read: “Regency Part2?”
Its box office also received a call saying Fury’s appearance next week would be met by a brutal backlash.
The threats came on the eve of the third anniversary of the murder of Kinahan cartel henchman David Byrne during a weigh-in at the Regency Hotel.
Drug boss Daniel Kinahan, believed to be the target, narrowly escaped as six men stormed the building leaving Byrne dead and two others injured.
Kinahan co-founded boxing management group MTK in 2012 but cut all ties with the business a year after the shooting. MTK told the Irish Mirror last night while Fury is still on its books, it had no role promoting his personal appearances in Ireland.
The Gypsy King, 30, who drew with world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in December, was due to speak in Cork Opera House next Tuesday.
He was also scheduled to appear at DCU on February 13 – but both nights have now been pulled due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
Dublin TD Noel Rock praised the college for not taking any chances as the Regency bloodbath is still “to the forefront” of local minds.
He told the Irish Mirror: “It’s quite alarming what’s being portrayed on the messages there.
“DCU were right to take the action they’ve taken.
“It’s the kind of graffiti we’ve never seen before in the area and the Regency event is still to the forefront of residents’ minds. We don’t want to see that kind of incident revisited in this area.
“We’re not used to those type of threats and I’d imagine upon review of whether it was credible or not they decided not to do it.
“These decisions are only ever taken heavily – you never want to cancel an event.
“But clearly on this instance in the interest of safety and participants, the audience and area, it was decided that ultimately this was the best outcome.”
A Gold Star Promotions spokesman said: “Due to circumstances out of the control of Tyson, ourselves and both the Cork Opera House and Helix DCU, An Evening With Tyson Fury in Cork and Dublin have been cancelled.
“Please refer to your venue for ticket refunds.”
A spokesman for the Helix also said those with tickets will get a refund.
