€500k quarry firm fine after crusher death

-

A QUARRY firm was fined €500,000 yesterday over a man’s horrific death in a workplace accident.

Joseph Harrington, 27, died instantly when he fell into a stone crusher in Co Mayo on June 11, 2015.

He plunged more than 17ft from an area that had no physical barriers.

Harrington Concrete and Quarries admitted three offences under health and safety laws.

At Castlebar Circuit Court, Judge Rory Mccabe yesterday branded the firm a “dangerous operation”.

He accepted the firm’s remorse over the death and noted improvements had been made to improve the quarry’s safety.
