“Pope Francis’ car will provide a morale boost to our volunteers at this time, during what has been a very tough year for all of us in the city.

“I also know this gift will be a great comfort to many families here in Derry, knowing we have been recognised by the Holy Father and by Archbishop Martin for the work we do.”

The vehicle’s original Irish number plate – 182-D-2018 – was reserved to commemorat­e the papal visit. However, the car is now registered in the North, with the original plates on display at John Mullhollan­d Motors in Campsie, Co Derry.

Raymond Leddy, the Head of Marketing and Product at Skoda Ireland, said yesterday the manufactur­er is delighted to see the vehicle going to a worthy cause.
