- BY SHARON MCGOWAN BY GERARD COUZENS

Daniel Mallory A BESTSELLING author has apologised for faking brain cancer.

The Woman In The Window writer Daniel Mallory confessed he’s battled with mental health issues – but never had the incurable disease.

He spent weeks at the top of the New York Times bestseller list with his novel, which he penned under the name A J Finn.

The 39-year-old’s lie was revealed through a recent profile in the New Yorker magazine.

The publication claimed that along with lying about having cancer, Mallory also claimed his mum had passed away from the disease and his brother had killed himself.

In a statement the New York writer released in response to the damning article, Mallory apologised for his lies.

He said: “For the past two years I’ve spoken publicly about mental illness.

“The defining experience of my life – particularly during the brutal years bookending my late 20s and mid-30s – and the central theme of my novel.

“With the benefit of hindsight, I’m sorry to have taken, or be seen to have taken, advantage of anyone else’s goodwill.

“However, desperate the circumstances, that was never the goal.”

ON SOCIAL MEDIA DEFENDING RONALDO

CRISTIANO Ronaldo’s mum has spoken out for the first time to defend him against rape allegations.

Dolores Aveiro said she had confidence in the soccer star and insisted: “I know the son I have.”

She also claimed Ronaldo’s American accuser Kathryn Mayorga “didn’t go to his hotel room to play cards” in a put-down of the woman who says she was raped by the star at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.

Dolores said her first words about the claims – which have prompted a new Las Vegas police investigation after Ms Mayorga said she was coerced into signing a €331,000 settlement for her silence – during a PR event in Lisbon.

She told a Portuguese newspaper as she launched her own wine and olive oil brand, in a clear-cut reference to Ronaldo’s accuser: “I have confidence in my son when it comes to what happened.

“When she went there, it wasn’t to play cards. It was to do something. I know the son I have.”

SETTLEMENT

Dolores, who now spends most of her time in her native Madeira, showed her backing for her son – who denies the claims against him – on social media last October by posting a picture of him in a Superman cape.

The caption read: “I want to see who has the courage to put this photo on their profile for a week and make a chain for him... for Portugal, for him, for us and for the union of our people, for justice. He deserves it.”

The cartoon-style picture carried two hashtags in Portuguese. One translated as #Ronaldo, we are with you to the end and #Justicacr7 as #Justice for CR7.

Dolores also confirmed she would be arriving in Turin yesterday to attend a birthday party for the former Manchester United star after sending him a video message when he turned

34 on Tuesday.

US police said last month a request had been submitted to Italian authorities for a

DNA sample from the dadof-four whose girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez is supporting him.

Ms Mayorga’s lawyers have vowed to take the case to America’s

Supreme Court if needed. Playing for Juventus
