Council workers clear road in Westport, Co Mayo STORM Erik wreaked havoc around Ireland yesterday with 130kmh gales – but there is good news for the weekend as sunshine is on its way.

Four weather warnings were in place as powerful gusts and heavy rain battered the country – bringing spot flooding in some areas.

But strong winds are set to subside today with good sunshine and some scattered showers in Ulster and North Connacht.

Weather chiefs have warned of rain moving into southern counties later in the day.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “Highest temperatures of 5C to 9C in moderate to fresh westerly breezes.” But temperatures are set to nosedive to as low as -3C this weekend.

The forecaster added: “Tonight will be mainly dry with clear spells and frost.

“However, it will be cloudier in southern areas with the chance of a spell of rain or sleet here for a time.

“Minimum temperatures of 0C to 3C in light to moderate northwest breezes.

Tomorrow will be chilly and bright with sunny spells and some showers.

“The showers will become frequent in Ulster, some with hail and thunder.

“Maximum temperatures of 5C to 8C in moderate north-west winds and cold and mostly clear overnight.”
