Walsh’s men have fallen way off pace

v WHEN Monaghan travelled to Pearse Stadium for the final round ‘Super 8s’ game last year, it was hard to imagine how things could be going much better for Galway.

Kevin Walsh’s side had lost just one out of 13 League and Championship games in 2018 – and even that was an encouraging performance in the League final against Dublin – and were in the All-ireland semi-final with a game to spare.

They had beaten Kerry in the Championship for the first time since 1965, and bridged a 17-year gap by winning a Championship game in Croke Park and qualifying for the last four.

But they were well beaten by Monaghan and subsequently Dublin the following week in the semi-final. With Dublin repeating the dose last Saturday, it means Galway have lost three of their last four League and Championship games by an average of more than nine points.

That said, the Tribe will be strong enough to stay in Division One, but they’ll do well to get anything from Clones towards doing so.
