1976: John Curry became the first British man to win the Olympic figureskat­ing title and the first Briton to win a gold medal in skating since Jeannette Altwegg in 1952 when he triumphed in Innsbruck, Austria. 1990: Mike Tyson (right) was knocked out in the 10th round of a heavyweigh­t contest by James ‘Buster’ Douglas in Tokyo.

2003: Roy Keane, who had stormed out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup training camp nine months earlier, announced his retirement from internatio­nal football. He did return to the Republic team before retiring again.

2004: John Magnier and JP Mcmanus increased their shareholdi­ng in Manchester United to 28.89 per cent. The racehorse tycoons later sold their stake to American Malcolm Glazer.
