1976: John Curry became the first British man to win the Olympic figureskating title and the first Briton to win a gold medal in skating since Jeannette Altwegg in 1952 when he triumphed in Innsbruck, Austria. 1990: Mike Tyson (right) was knocked out in the 10th round of a heavyweight contest by James ‘Buster’ Douglas in Tokyo.
2003: Roy Keane, who had stormed out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup training camp nine months earlier, announced his retirement from international football. He did return to the Republic team before retiring again.
2004: John Magnier and JP Mcmanus increased their shareholding in Manchester United to 28.89 per cent. The racehorse tycoons later sold their stake to American Malcolm Glazer.
