DEAD RODENT HORROR IN HOSPITAL KITCHEN
A HOSPITAL kitchen was issued with a closure order after a dead rodent was discovered, it has been revealed.
Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan, Co Meath, was also found to lack proper pest-proofing on external drains.
The order was served on January 2 and lifted on January 5.
Food Safety Authority of Ireland chief Dr Pamela Byrne said: “Pests and insects can pose a grave risk to human health.
“Our inspectors are finding recurring incidents of filthy premises and rodent infestations in food businesses.
“Implementing and maintaining a
List of food businesses served with enforcement orders last month: pest control system is a basic requirement and is of the highest importance for food business operators.
“They have a duty of care to their customers to serve food that is safe to eat.”
The order was made by the FSAI under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.
Elsewhere, the Quay’s Restaurant in Temple Bar, Dublin, was served a closure order on January 8. It was lifted on January 15.
Ten enforcement orders were served on professional kitchens last month for food safety legislation breaches.
This included nine closure orders and one prohibition order. Inspectors found black mould in food storage containers, raw chicken in a bowl on top of a pan of cooked rice, raw fish stored next to raw chicken and rodent droppings in kitchens.
Dr Byrne added: “Non-compliances by businesses are not tolerated and all breaches of legislation are dealt with to the full extent of the law. “If any business owner is unsure of what is required of them by law they can visit the FSAI website at www.fsai.ie.”
