SPEAKING TO THE RTE GUIDE

FAIR City star Tony Tormey has admitted he doesn’t always enjoy meeting his overeager fans.

The actor, best-known as love rat Paul Brennan, has been part of the hit RTE soap for 30 years.

And while he usually enjoys the attention he receives, he said he doesn’t like it affecting the lives of his loved ones.

Recalling an incident when a fan called him a “male slut” while on a family day out, the father-of-two told the

RTE Guide: “You get used to it.

“I embrace it and enjoy it and like the fact as an actor you’re making an impression.

“But when it impinges on your family life, then no, I don’t welcome that.”

The soap star’s character has had an eventful love life beginning with the tragic death of Helen followed by two broken marriages to Niamh and Nicola, topped off with several affairs in between.

It may be the week of love with Valentine’s Day around the corner but in Carrigstown powerhungry Paul has been busy trying to split up the relationship between his on-screen son Oisin and Charlotte Bishop. Four children to four different women later, he believes a female actor would find it more difficult to play someone with such a complicated past.

He said: “Yeah, for a woman to have four children with four different men, numerous relationships and affairs, would probably not be as acceptable as it has been for Paul, sadly.” Dissecting his character’s controlling ways, Tony added: “Paul thinks that everything he does is right. “He wants to be across everything, involved in everything. Paul thinks he knows all the pitfalls.”

And separating Paul’s “over-protective” actions from his own parenting style, the actor, who shares two children Max, 15, and 12-year-old Issey with his wife Kate, admitted: “But this is a fairly natural thing for a father.

“Sometimes with my own kids, I have to stop myself saying they’re wrong because a lot of the time they’re not wrong.

“It’s knowing when to pull back and I don’t think my character Paul has that filter.”
