Camogie star pleads not guilty to assault in nightclub

Ashling Thompson, 28, has been charged with assault on Aoife O’flaherty and Jennifer Coakley in a Cork nightclub.

The city’s District Court heard the alleged offences relate to February 25 last year at Secret Garden in Rearden’s, Washington Street.

A section three charge in the case, which involved assault causing harm to Jennifer Coakley, was previously dismissed because gardai could not obtain medical records.

Eddie Burke, solicitor for Thompson, of Newtownsha­ndrum, Charlevill­e, Co Cork, said yesterday his client intended to plead not guilty to both charges. He told Judge Olann Kelleher he was seeking a date for a trial and the hearing would take up to two hours. The judge fixed a date of May 1 and remanded Thompson on continuing bail.

The GAA ace did not speak during the brief hearing. She wore a pink jacket, a white top and white trousers.

Thompson has won three All-ireland medals with Cork and three senior club championsh­ips with Milford.

She received an All Star award in 2015 and 2017 and was on All-ireland winning teams in 2014, 2015 and 2017.

She was also captain of the Cork camogie team which won the O’duffy Cup in 2015.

Thompson had a serious car crash when she was 19 which left her with significan­t injuries. She was forced to stop playing for a period as a result.
