I KISSED MY BROTHER-IN-LAW

-

Dear Coleen

On Valentine’s Day we’d all been out for a meal and got drunk. My husband went to pick up our children from their grandparents’ house, leaving me all alone with his brother and, as I got up from the chair, he went in for a kiss and I kissed him back quite a few times.

I feel so bad and guilty about what happened and have no idea what to do. The brother doesn’t seem to feel bad about it at all.

The following day he invited us all to his place as his ex-girlfriend (who’s just had his baby) was there. He claims to still love her.

Coleen says

Well, he doesn’t sound like a great guy, but I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that. As well as betraying his brother, he also has a situation going on with his ex and it sounds as if she sent him packing despite the fact she was having his child.

He’s bad news. Make it very clear to him it was a drunken mistake that you don’t want to repeat and then create some distance – you don’t have to see him or visit his house. And make sure you’re not on your own with him when you’ve been drinking.

You’re obviously wrestling with guilt. Only you can decide whether to keep what happened to yourself or tell your husband. I doubt very much your brotherin-law will spill the beans as I’m sure he knows it would kill his relationship with his brother.
