HAUL POGBA

Midfield star desperate for trophies after last season’s flop with Reds

PAUL POGBA is being driven on this season by memories of finishing last year empty-handed with Manchester United.

Midfielder Pogba lifted the World Cup with France last summer (below).

But that joy came on the back of a trophyless season for his club, who finished second in the league and lost the FA Cup final.

Pogba endured a poor first half of this campaign during which his relationship with Jose Mourinho hit rock-bottom and he found himself dumped on the bench in the closing days of the former United manager’s reign.

But he has responded in stunning style under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, producing the sort of consistent form that was expected when United splashed out a then world record £89million to bring him back to Old Trafford in 2016.

Pogba has scored nine goals and set up six since the Norwegian’s appointment in December.

His displays have helped United roar back into the top-four race and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, though they have a mountain to climb in the Champions League after losing their last-16 first leg to Paris Saint-germain 2-0. They will face

Wolves in the FA Cup last eight after Pogba scored one and set up another goal in United’s 2-0 fifth round win over Chelsea.

Pogba said: “All the competitions are important. We want to win something. Last year we didn’t win any trophies and I still remember that so this year we want to win something.”

Pogba is enjoying his best season having reached 14 goals with his header at

Stamford Bridge.

He said: “The team help me to get to my best.

They help me to score goals and make assists.

“We’re just enjoying playing together. It’s lovely. It always is to score goals.

“My job is a midfielder, it’s not to score goals it’s more to make assists but when I get the chance to score goals it is a great feeling.”

Pogba will be central to United’s hopes of success between now and the end of the season and team-mate Juan Mata said: “He assisted the cross for the first goal against Chelsea, and scored the second one. Even in the second half, after 80, 85 minutes he was still defending, going forwards. He’s very, very complete.

“He’s got physique, he’s got quality, he’s got a pass, he can go box to box. He’s one of the best. At Chelsea he showed why.”
