Group playing for 2 decades scoops €2.7m

-

A LOTTO syndicate playing together for 21 years couldn’t contain their excitement when they finally collected their massive €2.7million jackpot yesterday.

The group, which have used the same numbers since 1998, waited two months before collecting their cheque.

Buying their ticket in a Supervalu in Askeaton, Co Limerick, the team finally struck gold on the December 19 draw.

A spokesman for the winners said: “We decided to wait several weeks to claim our cheque.

“We wanted to let the news sink in and to get sound advice on how to spend the money.

“I was watching the Lotto draw on RTE One with the ticket in my hand on December 19. It’s a ritual I go through every week.

“I simply couldn’t believe it when all the numbers came up. I rang the others members of our small syndicate and they didn’t believe me at first.

“We will use the money to pay mortgages and to go on a good holiday and after that we will see.

“We don’t want this win to change our lives, it will be business as normal but it’s a terrific feeling.”

The group collected their massive win just days after it was revealed a family syndicate of siblings from the Naul in Dublin won the €175million Euromillions jackpot.

A National Lottery spokesman said: “What a week we have had here in Lotto HQ.

“There has been huge excitement with an Irish family winning a massive €175million.

“And then to have this €2.7 million Lotto jackpot from December claimed.

“This week could get even better as Saturday’s Lotto jackpot is soaring to a mega €10million, the biggest jackpot in two years.

“So fingers crossed we will round of an incredible week with another major win.”

Meanwhile, another lucky Munster punter is celebrating after bagging themselves a cool €244,895 in last night’s Lotto draw.

The unnamed winner matched five numbers plus the bonus after buying their ticket at the Daybreak shop in Lismore Park, Co Waterford.
