His girlfriend is jealous of me

-

Dear Coleen

My best friend is a boy and we’ve known each other since we were 10. We’re both 21 now and recently he started going out with a girl he met at university and it’s serious.

I was genuinely happy for him – he’s been single for a while – but his girlfriend isn’t so happy about me being in the picture.

When I met her she was frosty, to say the least, and then he told me she’d asked him not to see me any more.

I was pretty hurt that he’d even mentioned it and not just told her it wasn’t an option.

The whole thing is ridiculous because I’ve never fancied him and, as far as I know, he’s never fancied me.

We’ve never had a drunken one-night stand or even snogged, we’re just the best of friends and I can’t stand the thought of him not being in my life. Any ideas?

Coleen says

I think we have a jealous girlfriend situation. Why not talk to her directly and show her you’re not a threat? I think the key is to break through her frosty exterior so you can get to know each other better.

Explain you’re happy your best mate is in a relationship and, while you understand it means you might not see him as much, you still want to be in his life because your friendship goes way back. You never know, you might even end up being friends with her too.

However, I think your friend needs to be a little careful about a woman who’s already trying to control who he sees and who he doesn’t. I can hear alarm bells ringing!
