Man held over mum stab death

Shock after Cathy, 41, brutally killed in her home

- By NIALL O’CONNOR

A MAN was arrested yesterday after a mother of three was stabbed to death in her home.

Cathy Ward, 41, was found with multiple wounds in an upstairs bedroom by paramedics and gardai.

A source said gardai believe she was attacked in a domestic violence incident just after midnight in Clondalkin, West Dublin, and the suspect was known to her.

They added: “Mrs Ward was stabbed repeatedly. A man was held at the scene and was questioned at Lucan Garda station.

“Gardai are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. The alarm was raised by someone else in the house.”

Gardai sealed off the scene at Greenfort Drive, close to Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, and carried out a detailed examination.

The Irish Mirror could see blood prints on the door of the house and when forensics officers entered the terraced property blood was visible on the banister.

Residents paid their respects by laying flowers at the scene.

Cathy and her husband Alan had lived in the UK and it is believed he had suffered a stroke recently.

A woman said: “I knew her to see – she was a nice woman.

“It is shocking. Alan had suffered a stroke and was understood to be struggling with language after it.”

Cathy’s body was taken from the house after an examination by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis.

A Garda spokesman said officers were alerted at 12.30am and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

They added: “A man in his 50s was arrested and he is detained at Lucan Garda station.

“The house is sealed off and a technical examination of the area will be carried out.”
