John Downey HYDE Park bomb suspect John Downey can be extradited to the North to face charges over the murder of two soldiers, the High Court ruled yesterday.
The 67-year-old’s trial for the IRA bombing in London collapsed in 2013.
He is wanted by prosecutors over the 1972 murder of Ulster Defence Regiment soldiers Lance Cpl Alfred Johnston, 32, and Pt James Eames, 33, in Co Fermanagh.
They died when an IRA bomb exploded in a car they were checking on Irvinestown Road, Cherrymount.
The North’s Public Prosecution Service initiated extradition proceedings last year after determining it had sufficient evidence to charge him with the murders.
Justice Aileen Donnelly ruled in their favour yesterday.
In 2013, Downey, from Co Donegal, was charged with murdering four Royal Household Cavalrymen in a bomb in London’s Hyde Park in 1982.
He stood trial but the case collapsed after it was revealed he received a written assurance from former prime minister Tony Blair’s government that he was not actively wanted by the authorities.
Downey was detained last October under a European arrest warrant and an application for his extradition to the North followed.
