MEATH ONE TO WATCH

- BY PAT NOLAN

NFL DIVISION 2

Meath v Kildare

Tomorrow, Navan, 2pm

DIVISION One football will be tantalisingly close for Meath if they can see off old rivals Kildare.

Not since 2006 – when there were 16 teams split into two groups in the top flight – have Meath been in Division One. Indeed, you’d have to go back to 1997 to find the last time they were in a top division that contained just eight teams, as currently prevails.

Beating Kildare would put them three points clear of their neighbours with just two games to go. One more win after that would ensure promotion.

Inconsistency has been Meath’s Achilles’ heel for years but, for this

campaign, they appear to have shaken off that ailment. Their only loss was an unfortunate one in Donegal, having performed well.

Most impressively, they bounced back from that with successive wins.

Kildare dished out a couple of drubbings to Meath in the 2017 League and Championship, when the counties’ paths last crossed, but Andy Mcentee’s side have a bit more about them now.

Tonight, Semple Stadium, 7pm

CORK return to the scene of their last competitive victory this evening.

They were surprisingly comfortable winners against Tipperary in the Munster semi-final last May but then suffered humiliation against Kerry and Tyrone before taking just one point from a possible eight in this Division Two campaign.

Another loss here and they’ll be all but relegated with two rounds still to play.

Tipp have been undermined by injury during this campaign but they still showed what they’re capable of when beating Donegal.
