Square pegs really can fill round holes

THE appointments of Dessie Farrell and Kieran Donaghy to senior county hurling backroom teams is most interesting and a smart move for a number of reasons.

It was revealed last week that Donaghy will work with the Galway hurlers while Farrell has been added to Mattie Kenny’s Dublin staff.

Kenny quite rightly highlights Farrell’s experience and success at developing young players.

Farrell has had a lot of success at underage level and is a person who the hierarchy in Dublin feel has a lot to offer down the line.

They believe he’s the one person who may carry the torch whenever – and if ever – Jim Gavin decides to step down.

This appointment keeps him involved, relevant and right now the

I WAS driving down to do commentary on Mayo v Galway when Des Cahill told those listening on RTE Radio the attendance of the Waterford v Antrim game.

To say l was shocked is putting it mildly. It was wait for it - a total of 86 people.

What an insult to all those players involved.

Dublin hurlers gain a man with considerable experience and exposure to all the underage talent in the county.

How many counties have very good people with so much to offer on so many fronts but are never asked?

This is outside the box thinking from Dublin and something more counties should consider. The crossover from football to hurling and vice-versa should be no obstacle.

I’ve been saying this for a long time – counties have untapped wealth and resources on their own doorsteps who could bring so much to the table but sadly the powers that be just haven’t the vision or foresight to see what’s right in front of their noses.
