I’ll make a fist of it in League

- BY PAT NOLAN

PHILLY MCMAHON is putting his hand up for selection with Dublin in their closing Allianz Football League games.

Mcmahon hasn’t played for the county since last year’s All-ireland final after breaking a metacarpal in his hand.

He did return to action with his club Ballymun Kickhams in a one-point victory over Thomas Davis over the weekend however and is hoping to come back into the reckoning for the visit of Tyrone to Croke Park on Saturday week.

He explained: “I hit someone’s elbow. It was boxing, I was out for two and a half months. I was hoping to be back for Mayo, but one side of the bone wasn’t healed.

“So I had another four weeks on top of that then, which was a bit of a kick up the arse. It was just more so if I punched the ball, I could have broken the whole bone.

“It was in a splint. It’s a boxer’s break they call it. The two sides fractured, one side healed and one didn’t.

“As soon as I hit it, I got a sting and I was like ‘wow.’ And I got that throbbing pain, and I was like, ‘That’s it, there’s something wrong’.”

Mcmahon has largely been fortunate with injuries in his

Dublin career, with a chipped bone in his toe back in

2011 the only comparable lay-off to this latest one.

“Someone dropped a barbell on my toe in the gym! But I didn’t miss this much time. But it’s been great. I’ve been able to get my fitness levels up to a level I’ve never been at pre-season. It’s just about getting match sharpness now.”
