Daniel: I nearly died on water ski challenge
Singer’s terrifying ordeal for TV show
DANIEL O’donnell revealed he “nearly died” during a water ski challenge while filming a new travel series.
The terrifying ordeal will be shown in the opening scenes of episode one of Daniel And Majella’s USA Roadtrip on Sunday.
Daniel, 57, who has made no secret of his fear of water in the past, said: “I nearly died in the water. I thought I was going to pass out.
“I can swim but when I’m out of my depth in the water I have a wild fear of it, when I don’t know what I’m dealing with. I thought I wasn’t going to manage it.”
Despite struggling with anxiety in the water, the
Donegal singer admitted his wife took on an even tougher challenge for the show.
The first episode will see Majella, 58, perched almost 10ft in the air on the shoulders of an American man while waterskiing.
But suffering from a perforated eardrum, which causes her to struggle with balance and nausea when up high, Majella said she’d never go through the experience again.
She told the RTE Guide: “I was absolutely terrified of the waterskiing.
“I’m not that agile and when I was on his shoulders, I had to wrap my legs around his back to grip on, but I’m very stiff like that as I have a bit of arthritis.
“I couldn’t believe I got up there to be honest. I would have never done it except for it’s on TV so you’re egged on in that respect, and I wouldn’t do it again. But even though the waterskiing was scary, I like being challenged.”
■ Daniel and Majella’s USA Roadtrip airs on Sunday at 9.30pm on RTE One.
