A CONSONANT PROFESSIONAL

Bohs’ Dinny wins top gong..then appears on TV quiz

- BY PAUL BUTTNER

DINNY CORCORAN got a right ribbing at Bohemians training last night after his appearance on Channel 4’s hit gameshow Countdown.

It was an eventful day all round for the Gypsies’ striker having collected the SSE Airtricity/swai Player of the Month award for February at Dalymount Park earlier.

And though he had kept his TV appearance quiet, the cat was out of the bag on social media come

2pm when the show aired.

“I used to watch it as a kid with my mother Noelle,” explained Corcoran of the letters and numbers quiz show.

“My mother loves it and I’d always watch it with her and she always thought I was very good at it.

“So she went and applied last year and they gave me a date to go over in November. So I said, ‘Sure, why not?’. That was it.

“It was in Salford. They flew us over, put us up in the hotel for a few nights.”

Unfortunately the Player of the Month trophy was where Corcoran’s winning streak came to an end yesterday.

“It was grand, I enjoyed it but I got hockeyed on the show. Your one was quite good!” quipped Corcoran of formidable opponent, Maggie Barlow, who beat him 97-50. As the show was filmed in the League of Ireland off-season, Corcoran had managed to keep it under wraps.

“Nobody knew and I was hoping it would stay that way,” he added. “But I didn’t know so many people are tuned into Channel 4 at two o’clock in the afternoon!

“I went into the Whatsapp group and there was about 10 pictures up and plenty of laughing faces. I’m not looking forward to training later.”

Corcoran is still quietly confident he would beat any of his team-mates at the game and laughed: “I’d like to think so, hopefully anyway. I actually knew it was on because they gave me the date when I was over there.

“It was all planned ahead. They do four or five a day. When they asked me about how the season was going, I had to pretend we were inseason and were flying, even though it was the off-season!”

On his way to lifting the player award, Corcoran scored three of the four goals for Keith Long’s side as they won their opening three games, including a rousing victory over arch-rivals Shamrock Rovers (inset).

Bohs sit two points behind leaders Rovers, though with a game in hand.

The Phibsborough side has conceded just once and Corcoran said: “I know it’s very cliched but I think any of the team could have won it.

“We’ve defended so well. I got the match winners which catches the headlines but James Talbot in goal has been brilliant and the back four were smashing.”

Talbot was runner-up in the voting ahead of Derry City midfielder Ciaron Harkin.
