THERE’S GOLD IN THEM HILLS
Geologists reveal precious metal found in Irish rocks
A HUGE haul of gold could be waiting to be discovered buried in Irish rocks, experts have revealed.
A dig will begin within the next few weeks in the Slieve Glah area of Co Cavan where geologists have tested soils that show there could be a significant amount of the precious metal.
Chairman of Conroy Gold and Natural Resources, Prof Richard Conroy told the Irish Mirror it expects to find several million ounces.
A single ounce is currently worth over €1,100. Mr Conroy said: “We have discov- a gold trend runs for about 40 miles from Armagh across to Monaghan and into Cavan, down as far as the Cavan and Long ford border.
“We think there’s a lot more, between Glenish, Clonitbret and Clay Lake which is just across the border in Co Armagh, we think between those three areas there could be multi-million ounces of gold. We’ve already found half a million ounces of gold near Clontibret.”
But unfortunately anyone hoping to dig up a piece for themselves can’t keep the precious loot once it’s brought to the surface.
Mr Conroy said: “The State has ownerered ship of the gold but companies like ours would purchase the gold by paying the Government royalties.”
The expert revealed a mine would need to be built to excavate the gold and would have a significant impact on the local economy.
